Why we stopped tracking everything

2025-03-26

When we audited our own dashboards we found 140 tracked events and only nine that anyone had looked at in the past quarter. The rest were added for a question that was never asked, or answered once and forgotten.

We now write the question first and the event second. Each event has an owner, a reason, and a review date. If nobody can say what decision it informs, it gets removed at the next review.

The side effect was cleaner data. Fewer events means fewer naming mistakes and fewer broken tags, so the numbers we do keep are more trustworthy.
